1/15/2017 0 Comments One of the familyHave you ever the kind of friend where you felt comfortable enough with that person that you would just walk into their house without knocking first? The kind of friend that you had in childhood where you would just run in their home, grab a snack or a drink, and feel free to use the restroom? You weren’t tied up with formalities other than wiping your shoes on the mat or taking them off depending on the house rules. A friend you were so comfortable around you felt more like one of the family instead of a guest?
I’ve been blessed to experience that kind of friendship and it is comforting. It’s assuring that there is someone who welcomes you into their space like you belong. I spent a lot of years on the periphery of belonging with that constant feeling of being left out or not quite a part of my surroundings. And now that I finally have that sense of connective-ness with those who are around me, I realize that I belonged the whole time. In Ephesians 2:19 the bible says “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household.” This whole time, he has been there with the door to his home wide open. He stands at the door and knocks, waiting patiently for us to answer, but holds nothing back from us when we seek him. We don’t have to knock to be accepted into His family, we just have to choose to open the door. I have been using the guest towels in His house this whole time. He thought of me as a much loved daughter, but I had held myself in check (I didn’t want to over step). I knew he knew all about me, but figured I would be discreet and hold much of who I was back to avoid embarrassment and awkward silence. He’s God! What was I thinking?! When I opened myself to His complete love, I opened myself up to the love of other people and the ability to love myself. His perfect love opened the door to an abundant life. He wanted to be that friend to me that I had always sought. I am a part of the family, I don’t have to knock, I can grab a bottle of water out of the fridge, and make myself at home because I am home!
