Intentional - adjective
done with intention or on purpose; intended.
of or relating to intention or purpose.
Intentional is my word for 2016. I have been trying to implement this word on all aspects of my life. My time, my money, my health, my thoughts even, are all subject to this word. At least, that is how the year started when my resolve was fresh and my confidence was high. Less than two months into my year, and my focus has shifted slightly away from the mindfulness I envisioned and back to distraction.
I can sympathize with the Israelites a little more right now. I always wondered how they could take their eyes of God after all they had been through. How could they lose focus so easily? How could I? They were delivered from a physical bondage; I’ve been delivered from a spiritual bondage. He provided for them like he is providing for me, and yet my actions have changed from purposed to pointless.
Why this shift from actionable goals to random actions? It’s easier (focus takes work). Last weekend, I ate far more chocolate and caramel than one person should in a lifetime. That is NOT something I plan to do again, ever! This weekend I snarfed a bag of pretzels without compunction. Yep, my year of intention is coming with a lot of unintended calories.
Now, if I was to remain true to my old self, I would pout, throw in the towel, and call myself a failure. This year part of my being intentional is speaking the truth in all situations. A couple of small detours on my way intentional living aren’t deal breakers. I won’t let tiny troubles distract me from the calling God has placed in my heart. A hiccup doesn’t need to become a hindrance. I won’t let this stumble lead to 40 more years of wandering in the dessert.
Life is too short to live in regret. It’s too short for distractions. It’s too short to not be intentional. So my February isn’t quite as stellar as the start of the year, but that’s okay. God loves me anyway.
Tomorrow is the start of a new week. I am going to hit the reset button. This year has just begun and it’s going to be great. I have every intention of making it so!
